Dealing with repairs in your home is just a fact of being a home owner. Ignoring issues that develop in your home is one way to go, but you can’t ignore door repairs. You may not need to fix your door right away, but it really depends on the type of repair in question and what door it is that needs fixing.
Older homes that have settled may develop door problems that a home owner will notice. The door frame may become off kilter as the house settles over time. If the settling of the house changes the way the doorframe is then you could end up with a door that doesn’t hang correctly. When a door isn’t hanging correctly you can end up with many different kinds of problems.
Sometimes it is an easy fix, but usually it will be a little more complicated and will require that you have the entire door frame replaced to provide a true solution. Depending on what is wrong with you door you may just need to replace the door itself, however with most door repairs you will need to replace the frame to get the door to work best over long haul.
It is best to have someone who is used to installing new doors and frames do the work for you. You can try to do it yourself, but if the door isn’t working properly due to the house settling it might be more difficult to install the new door and frame without the right tools. With the proper tools a professional can make sure that the door is properly aligned and will shut properly and not have excessive gaps around the frame.
Some repairs are a little easier to accomplish and may be something you can do yourself without professional help. Simple things like changing the hinges on the door or even just oiling the hinges if they seem to be the cause of the sticking door. You may even just need to sand the top and bottom of the door which can help it close more effectively.
